Bryant Associates - Boston Public Improvement Commission

Boston Public Improvement Commission

Bryant over the years has had many projects reviewed for permitting by Boston's Public Improvement Commission (PIC). Utilizing this experience, Bryant is able to advise its clients relative to possible PIC issues early in the process, thus saving time and money. Using our survey and engineering staff to meet the project's site development needs, affords Bryant the opportunity to be cost effective in bringing a project through the PIC process. This assures that Bryant's design and plan preparations will be performed knowing the PIC requirements from the beginning rather than modifying design documents that were completed.

Bryant has experience on a wide range of projects which have progressed through the PIC process. Below is a partial list of Bryant's experience:

  • Vertical Discontinuances - Above ground building features that extend into the public way. Bryant prepared such discontinuances for the Boston Convention end Exhibition Center and Somerset Dormitory for Suffolk University.

  • Subsurface Discontinuances - Underground building features extending into the public way. Some examples Bryant worked on in the past are parking garages, utility rooms, building foundations and vent shafts.

  • Full Discontinuances - This occurs when both vertical and subsurface discontinuances exist.

  • Specific Repairs - This occurs when a structure or feature is installed in the public way that does not comply with City of Boston standards. In the past, Bryant has done specific repair plans for such things as granite sidewalks, bollards, sidewalk cafés, etc.

  • Laying Out or Relocation - This occurs when a new public way to be consturcted. Bryant has accomplished this in the past for such improvements as residental developments. Combinations of discontinuance and laying out plans have been prepared in the past to relocate public ways.

  • License Plan - This allows structures which are not permanent to be installed in the public way including canopies, awnings, and marquees.

  • Easement Plan - This allows for publicly owned utilities to have rights through privately owned land.

  • Sidewalk Cafés - To place tables and chairs in the public way, the proposal must be first approved by PIC. Bryant has completed many of these for restaurants throughout city including the Garden of Eden, Boston Beerworks, Maggiano's, and Legal Seafoods. The sidewalk cafe requirements can be found on the City of Boston's website.
